The John Winthrop Middle School Math Counts team competed at the Annual Eastern Chapter Competition at the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, February 4th. Competing were twenty-eight teams, consisting of four students per team, as well as well as over one hundred individual students. Three competition rounds lasted the entire morning. John Winthrop placed fourth overall among the teams and will move on to the State Competition, which will take place on Saturday, March 11th at the University of Hartford.
According to the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers, "The objectives of Math Counts are to elevate the prestige associated with achievement in mathematics among 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, increase public awareness of the importance of mathematics, and bring about improvements in the math curricula of our schools."
